Paid Family Leave Small Business Grant

Paid Family Leave Small Business Grant

By Brittney Sherman

Beginning July 1, 2020, the Paid Family Leave (PFL) Program was expanded from six to eight weeks, and the 12 week non-paid protected leave was expanded to all businesses, regardless of business size. The California Employment Training Panel (ETP) and the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency (LWDA), recently announced the availability of up to $1,000,000 in California State General Fund dollars, for California Small Businesses impacted by the Paid Family Leave (PFL) Program. The PFL SB Grant will provide to CA small businesses with 51-100 employees a payment of $1,000 and a payment of $2,000 to CA small businesses with less than or equal to 1-50 employees.

The grant funds are meant to help offset the costs incurred when training employees to cover the duties of the individual utilizing Paid Family Leave. Increased costs can include: training and upskilling existing staff to cover the duties of the employee on PFL, hiring and training additional staff to cover the duties of the employee on PFL, and the marketing, recruitment, and training costs to cover these activities.

City Council Approves Revisions to the Hotel Incentive Policy

City Council Approves Revisions to the Hotel Incentive Policy

By Brittney Sherman

At the August 17, 2022 City Council Meeting, Economic Development Director Matt Mahood presented revisions to the Hotel Incentive Policy (HIP) to allow for greater access and participation from all citywide hotels.

The revisions unanimously approved by the City Council, included the following:

-Adjust the Baseline TOT year to FY 2019/2020, lowering the threshold for most hotels to participate.

-Remove the requirement for existing hotels to increase in chainscale in order to participate in the program.

-Increase the maximum rebate for existing hotel renovations from $100k to $250K.

-Include an optional 5-year extension of the rebate timeline, to be approved by City Council, at a reduced rebate rate of 33%

There were no significant changes to the HIP as it relates to new hotel development.  New hotel developments are still eligible for a TOT rebate based on 50% of the cost of off-site improvements.

The Economic Development team believes the approved revisions to the HIP will open the door for additional reinvestment in the existing Morgan Hill hotels and assist with the recruitment of new hotels.
