You enter a room. It is a room you’ve never been in before. You are not alone though, accompanying you are your allies. You have accepted the story given to you before the door closes behind you. A clock appears to count down and the challenge has begun. With the same goal of escaping, you and your friends have a time limit to solve the mystery, the puzzles given to you in order to escape victoriously. 

This is an escape room. Sounds scary but in reality, it is the complete opposite. A fun interactive adventure that is growing into a popular activity among young kids and adults alike. According to USA Today, there are over 2,300 escape room facilities in the United States alone. Lucky for our community, one doesn't have to drive very far to experience this activity.

Located smack dab in the middle of downtown Morgan Hill is our very own escape room and MPower has the distinct honor of being Morgan Hill’s first. 

So let's get to know this new business with some facts.

What is MPower?

Opened back in November of 2018, MPower is live escape adventure room company and it is run by a trio of women; Hilary, Rebecca and Janelle, whose backgrounds in business led them to create an exciting experience right here in town. 

In a nutshell, “It is a real life puzzle room,” says Hilary. “You come in, you’re given a storyline, you’re given typically 60 minutes to come in and work a series of puzzles and solve whatever mystery or challenge the storyline has within that time. Each puzzle unveils something to the next thing to get to until you really reach the end.”

Process of Creating an Escape Room:

There are three aspects of an escape room; the story, the puzzles and challenges, and design. All come together to create an interactive experience. “All of us has a different background. One of us is heavily into design, one is more into math and science, one of us is more business so coming together with that is a good combination.” 

MPower has another distinction between other escape rooms, each room's story is unique in a way that each puzzle is created by these women as well as a flexibility when it comes to ever evolving. “We give flexibility to our stories. As we are designing along the way, we may tweak. The ending may change slightly. We might add to the plot. It kind of evolves. It starts with the skeleton of what the story may be, we work around it. Once the room is done, it’s not done.”

Expansion in the Future: 

As of now, there are currently two rooms that are being offered at MPower; The Cabin and The Secret. The two rooms are in high demand but once the demand is dwindling, one will drop off and another will take its place. As far as expanding to more rooms, there are plans to create a third room sometime in late spring to early summer. 

Why Morgan Hill?

The answer to why bring an escape room to Morgan Hill is a simple and obvious one. Yes, there is no other escape room in the area. The closest one is in south San Jose but according to Rebecca, “it’s our community. We all live here. We have kids here.” This is their home. 

It is also a great way to bring in visitors from all over and drive up business for the community. “We are drawing them out, their coming to the community, to use and patron our restaurants,” Hilary commented, “We are able to bring them in, not only our local community to expose them, but also to bring in more business to the downtown, for people who come to visit us and try to experience.” She added, “A business like an escape room is great for them because generally people come to us before they eat. Having it at this location, their likely going to stay.” 

With Morgan Hill growing and the appearances of new restaurants, new apartments, and a future hotel in the downtown area, more and more people are coming to Morgan Hill and seeing what we have to offer.
