US ‘probably in recession right now,’ BlackRock CEO says; Biotech construction drops; Freight business seen declining

BlackRock CEO Larry Fink and JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon warned Monday of significant economic slowing due to sweeping trade tariffs, with Fink noting many CEOs think the U.S. is “probably in a recession right now.” Dimon cautioned that higher prices could strain an economy already losing steam. Uncertainty continues as markets fluctuate based on the latest news, with the Dow recently losing over 349 points amid tariff-related volatility.

Shoppers are visiting multiple grocers, comparing prices, and gravitating toward private-label and discount options. Grocers are responding by refining strategies, including discounter and omnichannel expansions, as they compete for a larger share of consumers’ wallets.

Bay Area leaders pitch sales tax to save BART, Muni, regional transit

Bay Area leaders, including state senators Scott Wiener and Jesse Arreguín, have proposed a sales tax to fund regional transit systems like BART, Muni, Caltrain, and AC Transit, aiming to prevent severe service cuts due to declining ridership and financial challenges. The Connect Bay Area Act, or Senate Bill 63, suggests a 2026 ballot measure for a half-cent sales tax in San Francisco, Alameda, and Contra Costa counties, with an option for San Francisco to increase it to 1 cent for additional Muni funding. Without this new funding source, transit agencies may face drastic reductions in service, including station closures, reduced operating hours, and mass layoffs.
